Week two Midtown Optimist Club Pitcher of the Week. Eli struck out 15 batters against Russellville. He gave up just three hits, two earned runs and walked one on 92 pitches in 5.1 innings.

Auburn Signee named Player of the Week.
By Joey Warner MOBILE BASEBALL CONNECTION John Griffin (JG) Bell of the Faith Academy Rams is named the MIDTOWN OPTIMIST CLUB "Player of the Week" for the fifth week of the 2020 area high school baseball season. JG is an infielder that has signed to play college baseball at Auburn University. In five games last week, JG was 8-for-15 with 8 runs; 7 RBIs, 4 doubles, 2 home runs, 4 walks and 2 stolen bases. On the season, Bell is hitting .364 (16-for-44) with 13 RBIs; 18 runs, five doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 11 walks and 9 stolen bases for Coach Matt Seymour's Rams, which are 10-5 overall and ranked #4 in the 6A State poll. Bell is a career .388 hitter in his previous three seasons at Faith Academy. He collected 26 doubles; four triples, three homers, 51 RBIs and 75 runs scored before his senior season. JG helped his team win the 5A State Championship in 2018 and runner-up in 2017. On March 14th John Griffin Bell tweeted, "Crazy to think these next two games could be the last two of my senior season and it feels like it just started. Everything happens for a reason though and this is all part of God's Plan." Bell responded by going 4-for-7 with 2 home runs; a double, 3 runs, 5 RBIs and a stolen base in games against Tuscaloosa and Opelika. Former 12-year major leaguer player; major league hitting coach and Mobile Bay Bears Manager Turner Ward of Saraland will be the guest speaker and present awards to six all-star athletes. James Flynn of the Faith Academy Rams is named the MIDTOWN OPTIMIST CLUB "Pitcher of the Week" for the fourth week of the 2020 area high school baseball season.
Flynn pitched a masterful no-hitter as his Rams shutout West Florida 9 to 0. The right-hander fanned 13 in the seven inning complete game. He walked one while 63 of his 110 pitches were strikes. Last month, Flynn and teammate Eli Giles combined to hurl a no-hitter in the Rams' 4 to 1 win over the Theodore Bobcats. Flynn struck out 10 in six innings of work on 86 pitches. Giles struck out the side in the seventh on 15 pitches. Flynn is 2-0 this season with a 0.41 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched. James and his parents along with his coach Matt Seymour will attend the MIDTOWN OPTIMIST CLUB baseball awards Luncheon at the Azalea City Golf Course Clubhouse on Wednesday, March 25th at Noon.
